Course programme
Course description: On this new and exciting course you will gain skills and experience for a career in Interior Design, Product Design, Architecture, Sculpture, Set Design for Film and TV, Stage Design for Theatre and Furniture Design.
We aim to develop your 3 dimensional understanding from research and conceptualisation through to prototyping and construction. During the course you will learn the principles of 3 dimensional methodology; developing your drawing skills - figurative, environmental and reportage. You will develop material techniques and knowledge of 3D and 2D media properties combined with a sound knowledge of design methodology and history.
You will be based within the Creative Arts Building. However this is a client-facing, collaborative learning environment with work in the 3-D Workshop and wood workshops on campus as well as working off-site gaining experiences of real work and touring major sites of architectural and design significance.
Contextual, historical and critical analysis will form an important and expansive element of this course; whilst studying you will need to position and connect your work within the historical context of the world of Art and Design. You will be continually exposed to Art, Architecture and Design through class-based activities, drawing, material experimentation and off-site trips, projects and residential visits.
Entry requirements: Applicants should have five GCSEs at grades A*-C including English and Maths or a Level 2 qualification in a relevant area in addition to GCSE English and Maths at grade A*-C.
Learning outcome: Students will learn to project manage a 3-D Design from concept art and design, to material selection, manipulation, prototype and final outcome. Students will develop computer-aided design skills however the main focus of the course is developing student's art, hand and craft skills as well as their skills of project management.
Objective: In year one of the course you will
Develop the basic principles of 3 dimensional methodology, developing drawing skills, both from the figure, environment and reportage
Engage with spatial design, model making, sculptural processes, hand based craft, 2D and 3D visualization
Develop a sound knowledge of design methodology, art and design history and its relevant conceptualization
Work across selected workshops areas with an emphasis in off-site learning, exploring relevant work sites and significant architectural structures
In year two you will select your preferred working methods and materials and apply those to develop a coherent portfolio of work. This portfolio will be driven by your progression choice i.e. either degree route, apprenticeships or full time employment
Assessment: Students will be assessed on their responses to industry designed project briefs. This is a Level 3 coursework assessed course that is Internally and Externally Verified by the University of the Arts London (UAL). Students will be provided with regular formative and summative written and verbal feedback, linked to module-based briefs, including feedback from industry-linked clients. Students will be guided by their tutors throughout the course, with students developing and negotiating personal creative responses and progression routes.
Academic progression: Indicative academic progression routes:
BA (Hons) Interior Design, Norwich University of the Arts (NUA);
BA (Hons) Architecture, Norwich University of the Arts (NUA);
BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design, University Campus Suffolk (UCS);
BA (Hons) 3D Design, Camberwell College of Arts (UAL);
