The 4 day course runs on consecutive midweek days or can be completed over a two weekend period. It is set out for the absolute beginner, to learn the basic skills of modern plastering. The course also includes building and plastering an arched opening, the cutting and fixing of plaster coving as well as improving the technique of using the tools of the trade. Suitable for: The course is designed for people of all ages, male or female. Wether they are an absolute beginner, a DIY enthusiast, or a person wanting a change in their career.

Course programme


The course guides the student through the Health and Safety aspect of the trade before introducing them to the tools of the trade.

They are then instructed in the correct procedure in using the tools of the trade

Working in their own work station, the tutor applies plaster to all the ceiling areas, each student is then shown how to clean off and flatten their own areas to a level base.

the tutor then applies a top coat and each student is shown how to do a textured finish.

The student with the best ceiling wins an academy t-shirt

They are then coached into the application of 2 coats of plaster to the walls, working in their own cubicles, the tutor puts the first coat on the top and each internal of the wall, the student is then guided through the process of applying plaster to the area that is left.

The student is then shown how to clean off internals and flatten the wall to a level surface.

The tutor then applies a second coat of plaster to the walls, on the top and down each internal, the student is then guided through the art of laying on a finishing coat.

The student is then shown how to clean down the wall ready for finishing and tools that have been used.

The tutor finishes the top of the wall and the two internals, while the student is coached into finishing the remaining area.

The class then has a lunch break, while shown a video of Dry line plastering

Following lunch the tutor applies a first coat of plaster to half opposite wall in the cubicle, the student is coached into completing the area, top, side and bottom.

The student cleans down and flattens the wall ready for the second coat. The tutor then applies a finishing coat to half the wall and the student follows completing the process.

The student cleans down the wall and all tools that have been used.

The tutor finishes half the wall and the student completes the remaining area.

The students are the shown how to measure, cut and fix, galvanised board bead to the window wall.

The student is then instructed into applying a first coat of plaster to the top of the wall, the tutor follows up by completing the bottom area.

The student cleans down and prepares the wall for a finishing coat.

The student then applies a finishing coat to the top of the wall and the tutor completes the bottom area.

The student cleans down the wall and the tools that have been used.

The student finishes the top of the window wall and the tutor completes the bottom area.

To end the first day, a £5.00 note is pinned to an area 6ft from the floor, a line is drawn 2 inches from the bottom and then the student take it in turn to spread a coat of plaster from the line to past the £5.00 note, they get one attempt each day on the course, the first student to complete the task without any breaks in the plaster collects the money.

Photographs are taken at regular intervals to be displayed on the web site.

Day 2 starts with the use of pva to the plastered areas.

The textured ceiling is then plastered to a smooth finish.

All walls are re-plastered together with a featured alcove.

The students are then instructed in the method of constructing an ached opening to end day 2.

Day 3 and the students PVA the work stations and continue to improve their skills with the finishing trowel.

They then are guided through the application of plastering the arched opening.

Day 3 ends with a general discussion on how the course is running as well as being shown a video of the method of dry lining.

Day 4 starts with a team building discussion where the students are encouraged to plaster the work areas using their own initiative, working as a group they can visit each others work areas and encourage one another to build confidence in the group.

On completion of the work areas, the students are then shown how to cut and fix plaster coving to the ceiling areas.

Day 4 ends with a walk around all the stations with the students and a discussion on all the work that has been carried out.

The course ends with a discussion on how the course went for each student, points that have been achieved then final photographs with their individual Certificate of Achievement.


A feedback form is then provided for the students to complete.
