Course Content

In both AS and A2, this course links chemical theory to real life applications:

AS modules include:
  • The Elements of Life:atomic structure, periodic table, elements in the body and stars
  • Developing Fuels:energy in chemistry, the search for alternatives to petrol
  • Elements from the Sea:extracting elements from the earth
  • Atmosphere:the chemistrybehind ozone depletion and global warming
  • The Polymer Revolution:origins and development of some major plastics

A2 units include:
  • The Materials Revolution:Chemistry of nylon, polyester, kevlar
  • What's in a medicine?Chemistry of aspirin and other pharmaceuticals
  • The Thread of Life:Biochemistry of amino acids, proteins, rates of reaction
  • The Steel Story:the study of steelmaking, elements present in various steels
  • Agriculture & Industry
  • Colour by Design:study of colour and dyes
  • The Oceans:weak acids, buffers, predicting the direction of reactions.
  • Medicines by Design:synthesis of useful drugs from simpler chemicals

Methods of Teaching

Two teachers manage the teaching and learning of the AS/A2 course. You are expected to be attentive, participating in class discussions, carrying out experimental work individually or in groups, writing down notes and answers to problems. Homework includes reading textbooks, answering set questions, and preparing for tests and exams. Frequent homework / private study is essential to your success in this subject.

Videos, the intranet and internet are used to reinforce visual learning. Model making and practical work helps you develop experimental skills and kinaesthetic learning.

Workshops are held several times each week giving you an opportunity to get individual help with problems.

Methods and Patterns of Assessment

The AS assessment consists of one written exam taken in January, one written exam taken in June and a practical coursework component. In A2, assessment consists of two written exams, and a coursework component in the form of an individual investigation.

Financial Implications

You will need to buy two course textbooks, (approximate total cost £45). The college provides lab coats, safety goggles, and books for class use, but you need to provide your own stationery and scientific calculator. We ask you to contribute £10 each year to cover photocopying costs andresources. The College has a Student Support Fund for students who have difficulty in meeting these costs.

Career Possibilities

Advanced level Chemistry is essential for further study of Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Food Science, and is highly recommended for Biology, Forensic Science, Geology, and various Environmental science courses.
