Course information:
A2 in Classical Civilisation

Course summary:
This one year course leads to an A level qualification and is the second half (50%) of a two year A level course.

Course content:
The course aims to build on the interest in and enjoyment of Classical literature first acquired at AS. You are encouraged and expected to read widely, critically and independently, and to form your own opinions about a variety of texts. While focused primarily on the literature and literacy forms of the Classical period, the course is essentially interdisciplinary and you will also learn about other features of Greek society and culture, including philosophy, history, archaeology and religion/mythology.

The set texts include Virgil's Aeneid and four classical comedies.

Course structure:
Classical Civilisation combines with all other arts and humanities subjects.

Assessment procedure:
The A2 comprises of two units, each of which is examined and externally assessed, forming 50% of the four unit Advanced GCE.
  • Unit CC9: Comic Drama in the Ancient World

  • Unit CC10: Virgil and the World of the Hero (50% of A2; 25% of A level); 2 hour examination paper.

You will study Virgil's epic poem, alongside extracts from Homer's Iliad (the source of stories concerning the Trojan War). The examination is composed of two sections and you answer one question from each section.
