Communication and Culture at Barton Peveril College offers students a stimulating and challenging mix of cultural theory and practice across a range of AS and A2 modules.

You will investigate the cultural aspects of human communication using a variety of historical and theoretical perspectives. Your studies will incorporate a wide range of up-to-date and relevant stimulus materials from the mass media and other cultural forms as well as placing a great deal of importance on the use of your own personal experiences of culture and communication.

Communication and Culture is a useful cross-curricular subject that will help you develop a wide range of practical and theoretical transferable skills.

What Will I Learn on the Course?

Areas addressed on the course will include:
  • Just what is culture and why is there such a debate about it?
  • What is the value of culture?
  • How does culture affect me and the way I communicate?
  • What does my cultural consumption say about me?
  • What are the culture industries, who runs them and why?
  • Why is it smart to study popular culture?

The skills you will develop on this course will include:
  • Critical reading and analytical skills
  • Practical communication skills including- use of ICT, video making and editing, sound recording and photography.
  • Conversational and listening skills
  • Interview techniques
  • Research and presentation skills
  • Appropriate communication styles

Courses Content and Method of Assessment

Year 1 (AS)


Unit 1 - Understanding Communication and Culture

An integrated and complimentary introduction to the subject dealing with the personal level of communication and the students' own experience of cultural products. Externally examined via a 1 hour 45 minute paper. (50% of total AS level mark 25% of total A level marks).

Unit 2 - The Individual and Contemporary Culture

A coursework unit - independent research, investigation and exploration and a presentation. Internally examined and externally moderated. (50% of AS level marks 25% of total A level mark)

Unit 3 - Communicating Culture

As we move into the second year of this course there becomes a greater focus on the theoretical perspectives of communication and culture. Broad issues of cultural production and transmission will be covered in this unit. Externally examined via a 2 hour paper (25% of total A level marks)

Unit 4 - Communication and Culture in Practice: Portfolio

A major piece of independent work

After the Course?

This A level can lead students to degree courses in the increasingly popular area of Communication, Cultural Studies and Media Studies as well as a host of other higher level courses. It is also highly relevant to employment where people management and interpersonal skills are required.

Subject Combinations

Communication and Culture combines effectively with a range of 'partner' subjects such as Media Studies, Sociology, English Language and Psychology. It is also useful for students of Business, Health and Social Care and even the sciences.
