Course Content
Computing is a broad-based course where you will gain a sound understanding of the internal structure of computers and how they operate. A large part of the course will be spent studying programming and developing skills in expressing solutions to problems using algorithms.
AS Level
Unit 1: Problem Solving, Programming, Data Representation and Practical Exercise
This unit looks the processes of computation, algorithm design and the stages of problem solving. You will cover the fundamentals of programming in preparation for the practical exercise exam. This unit is assessed through a 2 hour practical and theory exam.
Unit 2: Computer Components, the Stored Program Concept and The Internet
This unit looks at the typical components of a computer system and the applications used. You will also study the structure of the internet, looking at protocols and web pages.The consequences and uses of computing are considered. This unit is assessed through a 1 hour written examination.
A2 Level
The A2 builds upon the content of AS with focus on programming and problem solving including communications and networking. Assessment will be two units one exam and coursework.
Unit 3: Problem Solving, Programming, Operating Systems, Databases and Networking
This unit focuses on the methods of tackling complex problems using comparisons methods and standard algorithms. You will also build on the theory from the AS year focusing on numbers, networking, databases and further programming concepts.
Unit 4: The Practical Project
The project provides an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the systems development life-cycle. You will produce a fairly complex program to a real-user problem and provide documentation for the analysis, design, construction, testing and evaluation of the system.
