Course Content

Economics is a subject that involves much discussion in lessons of current issues in the news. Theories are constructed to help our understanding of markets and economies. The subject is divided into two parts. Microeconomicsis the study of individual markets and the behaviour of consumers and producers. Macroeconomicsis the study of the economy as a whole, including inflation, unemployment, economic growth and international trade. Economics complements most A Level subjects as it develops both numeracy and literacy skills.

AS Level

Unit 1: Markets and Market Failure

This involves the study of individual markets and includes the study of supply and demand and the role of governments in an economy. It covers topics such as why has the price of oil risen? And should health care be free?

Unit 2: The National Economy

A2 Level

Students will explore new topics such as the behaviour of firms in different markets and why some people are paid more than others. There is also a greater emphasis on international trade and the European Union. This will include topics such as should there be free trade? and should the UK join the euro?

What can I do with an A-level in Economics?

Economics is a rigorous academic subject which is well respected by both universities and employers. The combination of analytical, numerate and literate skills developed in A-level Economics means it is a valuable preparation for a variety of university courses. However, many of our students choose to study Economics at degree level.
