Introduction
The study of English Language and Literature encourages students to develop their interest in both language and literature as interconnecting and mutually supportive disciplines. This course allows students to develop as independent, confident and reflective readers and writers.
Course Content
In the AS course students will study at least two key literary texts and a range of other literary and non-literary materials, both written and spoken in a variety of styles and from a range of historical periods and cultural backgrounds. Texts studied for 2006 and 2007 are selected poems by Dylan Thomas and Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.
In the Advanced Level course candidates' study of Language and Literature widens and deepens; they are expected to bear a more penetrating and evaluative analysis of the text they study. Texts studied for 2007 are John Fowles' The French Lieutenant's Woman and Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.
The frameworks and analytical terms learned and utilised in the AS modules will have obvious application in the A2 specification, with increasing rigour and supplemented by issues of comparative study.
Entry Requirements
The entry requirement for Advanced Level English is a C or above at GCSE - Higher paper, students with a C on the Foundation paper will not be considered.
Duration
The Advanced Level English course is completed over two years, the first year is devoted to AS subject content, whilst the second year is A2.
There are five teaching hours per week for both the AS and A2 areas.
Assessment
The course is modular and as such all six units that comprise AS and A2 are externally examined - no coursework! 50% of the marks attained in AS are carried forward to the A2 year. AS resits are offered in January to candidates wishing to improve their marks.
Progression
The study of English Language and Literature is pleasurable and rewarding. Many students go on to study English at degree level thereby opening many career paths.Please note that only students successful at AS Level are permitted to continue to A2.
Fees
For full time students aged between 16 and 19 the course is free, however January resits are charged per unit - please contact reception for current rates.
