English Language and Literature
English Language and Literature provides the opportunity to explore spoken and written English from real and imaginary worlds. At AS level, the focus is on texts from the 20th and 21st centuries, including one prose text, and includes a coursework requirement which allows students to explore and create texts related to a topic area, for example "Entrapment" or "The Supernatural and Gothic". A level requires students to compare and contrast two set texts (either poetry or drama) which have a common theme, for example "A Sense of Place" or "Love and Loss", and the coursework element means that students have the freedom to explore, analyse and create texts of their own choice relating to the theme of "The Human Experience". There is a strong emphasis on original, creative writing in this A level and through the study of written and spoken English, students will enhance their own writing skills.

This course is really useful for students who wish to become teachers (both primary and secondary) as well as being of great use for Drama students, as the course focuses on how things are said as well as what has been said. This course may also prove useful as an AS course for students thinking of applying for Medicine at university.

Subject Combinations

This subject goes well with a variety of A level subjects, including Communication Studies, Media Studies, Film Studies, Sociology, Drama and Theatre and BTEC Performing Arts.
