About this course
Students will be expected to have achieved 4 GCSEs grade C or above, including GCSE ICT or Key Skills ICT level 2. English Language and Mathematics also expected.

Course Content:
Student will engage for 5 hours a week to learn how ICT is used in industry to solve problems. Units covered include:
· Unit 1 - Using ICT to communicate
· Unit 2 - How organisations use ICT
· Unit 3 - ICT solutions for individuals and society
· Unit 9 - Working to a brief
· Unit 10 - Numerical modelling using spreadsheets
· Unit 12 - Publishing
This course is designed to promote awareness of how ICT can relate to both individuals and organisations.
Teaching Learning Methods:
Students will be expected to participate in a range of classroom activities that promote:
1. Student led discussions and workshops
2. Practical Exercises
3. Working on specific case studies
4. Producing well documented portfolios
5. Working to agreed deadlines
6. Daily submission of coursework
7. Working individually as well as part of a team
Key Skills:
Key skills are developed and assessed in addition to the core teaching program.
Assessment:
This course is assessed by a combination of examination and portfolio assignments. However, here, students would be expected to produce e-portfolios as opposed to paper based portfolios. Also, since this is applied ICT, the examinations for The Knowledge Worker and Using Database Software are practical examination as opposed to theory exams.
Skills & Commitment:
All students should be expected to be able to demonstrate the following skills and aptitude:
1. A keen willingness in ICT and how it plays a part in solving problems
2. A willingness to work independently
3. A willingness to use the VLE
4. An ability to communicate well; both in terms of written assignments and class discussions.
5. A willingness to put in an additional 5 - 8 hours 'home' time in addition to their 5 hours 'college' time.
All students at GCE level should aim to achieve a merit or distinction grade.
Cost:
In addition to the main College deposit, students should be willing to purchase the writing paper, folder, pens and storage media, i.e. USB memory stick or floppy disks.
