Course programme

Edexcel (1-2 years)

Course Content

The AS qualification will consist of two units:

Unit 1:Oral examination

Unit 2:Listening, reading and writing.

The A2 qualification will comprise an additional two units:

Unit 4:Oral examination

Unit 5:Translation and writing

Both at AS and A2 students will be able to acquire advanced linguistic skills by means of a topic-based approach to the study of the language. They will have the opportunity to study the relevant issues of the day, which affect Italy and Italians. These will include: health, drugs, organised crime, the environment, the European dimension, the media, politics and current affairs.

Methods of Teaching

The department employs a great variety of teaching methods.Italian is used as the main medium of instruction in the classroom and many different tasks are used in order to achieve each student's maximum potential.

Students will have to make presentations, hold a debate and will be able to improve their reading comprehension skills and develop their ability to implement advanced grammatical structures both in their writing and speaking. Topic booklets / worksheets will also be issued to the students on the themes mentioned above and most tasks will be completed in pairs, small groups, individually or through whole-class teaching. In addition, students will have access to an Italian assistant for up to 40 minutes per week to consolidate and improve on what they have learned in class. Students will also have one time-tabled lesson per week in the language centre to practice their listening and grammar skills.

Methods and Patterns of Assessment

Most methods of assessment will be related to the structure and demands of the syllabus.

Students will have the opportunity to write essays, letters and reports as well as doing listening and reading comprehension. Students will also use the Italian language as the main form of communication in the classroom and they will have to initiate discussions and make presentations to the class in Italian. Role play is also an integral part of learning and speaking the Italian language.

Financial Implications

All students will have to purchase their own textbook and grammar book. They are advised to obtain a dictionary (e.g.: Collins Italian/English Dictionary) for home use. A small charge may be levied for photocopied material.

Students will also have the opportunity to visit Italy on a trip to Florence, Rome, Sorrento and Pompeii.

The College has a Student Support Fund for those students who have difficulty meeting these costs.

Career Possibilities

Italian, and indeed languages in general, can be studied with nearly any subject at university level. Many modern languages and Italian graduates have pursued careers in law, accountancy, banking & finance, journalism, marketing and public relations, the Civil Service, translation and interpreting as well as teaching. Those with language skills are a relative rarity in the UK; therefore employment prospects are extremely high.
