Course information:
A2 Level in English Literature


Course summary:
This one year course leads to an A Level qualification and is the second half (50%) of a two year A Level course.

Course content:
The course aims to develop both an interest in and enjoyment of English Literature. You are encouraged and expected to read widely, critically and independently, and to form your own opinions about a variety of texts.

The second year (A2) builds upon the knowledge, skills and understanding you gained at AS level, enabling you to gain a wider sense of literary study. This detailed knowledge and understanding of texts will assist you to explore and make connections and comparisons between them.

The set texts include one poem written before 1800 (Geoffrey Chaucer†s The Pardoner†s Tale), one novel (Emily Brontë†s Wuthering Heights) and one collection of short stories (Angela Carter†s The Bloody Chamber), both written since 1800. Coursework includes the study of two texts for the purpose of exploring and developing the connections between them (1500-2000 word essay), and the application of critical ideas to a third text (1200-1500 word essay).

This one-year course leads to an A level qualification and is the second half (50%) of a two year A level course.

Assessment procedure:
Final assessment consists of two coursework essays and one written exam.

Unit 3: Examination â€" Elements of the Gothic (60% of A2 / 30% of A level)
You will study the above-mentioned texts in relation to the conventions associated with the Gothic tradition.

Unit 4: Coursework â€" Comparing Texts / Further and Independent Reading (40% of A2 / 20% of A level)
This unit is assessed through two coursework essays as detailed above.


Qualifications achieved:
GCE A2 level English Literature, syllabus B, awarded by AQA.
