Course information:
A2 Level in Film Studies


Course summary:
The course is designed to deepen students†understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of film, the major art form of the twentieth century. The course encourages study of a wide range of different kinds of films developing skills of observation, critical analysis and personal reflection as well as developing creativity and practical skills in audio-visual and written forms.

Course content:
The course consists of two modules. The first module involves researching and producing a presentation script on one focus film and at least two other related films. In addition there is a creative project which involves producing a short film or a screenplay or an outline for a documentary.

The second module focuses on i) Aspects of national cinema ii) International film styles iii) Urban stories and iv) International feminist film. In addition the module focuses on issues of spectatorship and the critical study of one chosen film.

Assessment procedure:

Module 1: (40% of A 2 Level marks).
Students produce An Auteur study on a director, producer, actor of their choice and a creative piece which could take the form of film journalism, scriptwriting or film making

Module 2: (30% of A2 Level marks).
One and a half hour examination paper on world cinema

Module 3: (30% of A2 Level marks).
One two hour examination on critical studies which include film text and spectators, producers and audiences and messages and values

GCE A2 Level Film Studies awarded by Welsh Joint Education Committee
