Progression opportunities:
History is an excellent subject to use as a base for higher education, not only to pursue a degree course in History, but for other degree courses as English, Law, Languages, Social Sciences and Theology, which frequently include a historical context.
There are few careers apart from teaching and museum and archive work where History is of direct use, but an A level or degree in History is widely recognised as a valuable qualification for other careers e.g. Law, Banking, Journalism, the Civil Service, Local Government, Business, Commerce, Library work and Retail Management. This is because the study of History provides a good training in thinking, in arranging and sorting information and ideas, and in explaining things clearly.
Historical knowledge also provides you with a useful background to help you understand current problems and events.

Free study and financial support:
Most full-time students do not have to pay for their course. We may also be able to help you with some of the extra costs associated with college, eg travel, childcare, equipment, books etc. In addition, if you have just left school, you may be eligible for an Educational Maintenance Allowance. Please ask us about â€-Money Matters†for more details.
