About this course

It is advisable to have studied Physical Education at GCSE Level and have a good knowledge and understanding of the subject. However, this is not a pre-requisite for the course though students must attain BB in science.

Each student will study three modules during AS and a further three at A2 Level during the second year. Each module will be taught using specified text and a range of both practical and theoretical activities. The work schedule will require a change of clothing for practical lessons, relevant texts and folders for each module.

Course Units AS Units

Unit 1
Physiological and Psychological factors which improve performance.

Unit 2
Socio-Cultural and Historical effects on participation in Physical activity and their influence on performance.

Unit 3
Coursework - Analysis and evaluation of the factors which affect performance.

· Section 1: Personal Exercise Plan (PEP)
· Section 2: Practical coursework assessed in one activity of the student's choosing.

Assessment:
There will be two examination papers:

· Unit 1 = 1 ½ hours = 40% of AS or 20% of A Level
· Unit 2 = 1 ¼ hours = 30% of AS or 15% of A Level

Plus practical marking and coursework:

· Coursework - PEP = 12% of AS or 6% of A Level
· Practical - PEP = 18% of AS or 9% of A Level

A2 Units

Unit 4
Physiological, biomechanical and psychological factors that optimise performance.

Unit 5
Factors affecting the nature and development of elite performance, with a synoptic assessment.

Unit 6
Analysis and critical evaluations of factors which optimise performance, with a synoptic assignment.
