Course information:
A2 Level in Sport & Physical Education


Course summary:
This A level course is for students with an interest in sport. The course involves an in-depth look at sport from scientific, sociological and historical viewpoints.
Sport Studies is an academic course ideal for students wishing to progress on to sport and PE courses at a higher level.

Course content:
The A2 modules of learning provide the candidate with the opportunity to develop and extend their knowledge, skills and understanding gained at AS to enable them to identify the factors which lead to the optimisation of their own or others' performance.

Unit 4 - Requires a deeper understanding of the Physiological
and Psychological processes studied at As and their
effects on the ability of performers to optimise their
performance.

Unit 5 - Involves the investigation of global trends and their
effects upon sport participation. Candidates will
critically evaluate the socio-cultural and contemporary
issues which influence trends of participation in sport in
the UK, France and the USA.


Unit 6 -
Through coursework, candidates will be given the
opportunity to further develop understanding by
identifying the factors which promote optimisation of
performance. This will require understanding of, and the
application of knowledge gained from previous units of
study.

Course structure:
Candidates will use evaluation and appreciation of their own or others' sporting performance to acquire and apply their knowledge, skills and understanding.
The aims of this course are to use a range of physical activities to enable the student to:
· Develop knowledge, skills and understanding of the
factors which influence the quality of performance.
· Apply their knowledge, skills and understanding to a
range of activities to improve performance.
· Evaluate performance and plan for improvement.
· Develop an understanding of the socio-cultural, moral
and contemporary factors in physical education, which
affect participation in and provision for sport and
physical activity.

Assessment procedure:
This is an examined course and assessment consists of two papers and an individual project.
