Maths - Use of
Free standing units in mathematics are designed for students who wish to continue with mathematics beyond GCSE level, but either do not have the entry requirement for A level/AS level or do not feel that they can devote the time allocation to an A level/AS level in mathematics.

The aim of each free standing mathematics unit is to encourage students to apply mathematical principles in their studies, work or interest. The emphasis is on application of knowledge in a variety of situations. We offer three units: 'Using and applying Decision Mathematics', 'Using and applying Statistics' and 'Working with Algebraic and Graphical Techniques'.

AS Use of Mathematics is designed for students with GCSE Mathematics at grade C or above.
This course can be studied in one year or by taking one FSMQ unit in the first year and the other unit in the second year
The qualification is for students not intending to continue to study A level Mathematics in Year 2.

Students following the full AS course will study a third unit called 'Using and applying Mathematics'.

What Will I Learn on this Course?

Using and applying Decision Mathematics -You will:
  • Select & organise data for analysis.
  • Use appropriate mathematics to find solutions.
  • Interpret solutions, drawing relevant conclusions.

Using and Applying Statistics -You will gain:
  • An ability to use statistical techniques and critically analyse data.
  • A qualification to illustrate your capabilities in Mathematics beyond GCSE level

Working with Algebraic and Graphical techniques: You will
  • Develop your algebraic skills beyond GCSE.
  • Be able to demonstrate your ability to analyse, make sense of and describe real situations using your increased knowledge of graphs, algebra and functions.

Course Content and Method of Assessment

Using and Applying Decision Maths:
  • Use of networks to model real situations
  • Use of route inspection and traveling salesperson techniques
  • Critical path analysis
  • Mathematical modelling

Working with Algebraic and Graphical techniques :
  • Fitting common functions to data
  • Using algebraic techniques to solve quadratic, polynomials, exponential and trigonometrical equations
  • Use of rates of change and maximum and minimum points
  • Use of logarithms.
  • Assessment for all three units is by coursework (50%) and examination.

Applying Mathematics:
  • This unit concentrates on mathematical comprehension, explanation, reasoning and modelling.
  • Assessment is by examination at the end of the course.

After the Course

Each unit is certificated and will enhance your application for employment or Higher Education by illustrating your ability to achieve an A level standard in some areas of mathematics. Each unit also attracts UCAS points.

You can study one unit in Year 1 and then complete AS in Year 2 if you wish, as the majority of our students do, or you can study the complete AS level in one year.

Subject Combinations
  • Using and applying Decision Mathematics supports Humanities, Sciences and Business/Economics.
  • Using and applying Statistics supports Humanities, Social Sciences, Business/Economics, Psychology, Geography, Biology etc.
  • Working with Algebraic and Graphical techniques supports Science and Technology courses.

All courses would enhance an intermediate or advanced level courses.

Entry Requirements

The full AS is excellent for students wishing to continue with mathematics beyond GCSE who do not have the entry requirements for a traditional Mathematics AS. All courses are designed for students with a minimum of a grade C at GCSE mathematics, preferably at the Higher Level. Students who achieve a C at Foundation level will be considered on individual merit, but will have to do a minimum of one additional lesson a week as they will have missed out on necessary preparatory work for this course if they haven't studied the Higher level GCSE.
