Moving Image
The AS/A Level Moving Image course concentrates on film making as an art form. It allows for an interpretive artistic response to the visual world which is produced with the aid of lens-based media and digital technology. Students are encouraged to use the medium as a form of personal expression and gain a critical appreciation of contemporary and historical links within film, animation and art.

The skills you develop are varied. Among them you will gain a working knowledge of materials, practices and digital technology through interpreting and conveying your imaginative and creative ideas. This also includes a specialist vocabulary and an understanding of the film, animation and art in society.

AS/A Level Moving Image is not an easy option and you should be prepared to work hard at developing your abilities. Hard work is recognised through showcasing students films in an annual celebratory Showreel at the local cinema. If you have an aptitude for the subject, are enthusiastic and self motivated you may have the basic skills to succeed.

The course is very popular and we suggest that you register an interest in the subject on your application form. Introductory day in July is also an important opportunity to find out more about the course and ensure that it is right for you.

What will I Learn on this Course?
  • Production of story boards with creative image making such as collage, photography and Photoshop.
  • The direction and movement of the camcorder and the control or use of light.
  • Exploring viewpoint, composition, lighting, shape, space, texture, tone, imagery and symbolism.
  • Animation techniques involving stop-motion such as cutouts, model, copy art and rotoscoping.
  • Thoughtful image analysis using specialist language exploring pioneers of film, pioneers of animation, contemporary artists and film.
  • Exploring moving image with sound.
  • Creating ideas, filming, directing, editing and the final production of short films.

Course Content And Method Of Assessment

AS Level Unit One: Coursework Portfolio (60%)
This is a largely practical project that builds upon the summer homework inspired by broad themes. In addition to practical work you will be required to study the work of other relevant practitioners and learn how to analyse their images. Preparatory work is presented in the form of a sketchbook or mounted sheets. Final pieces will be presented on DVD.

AS Level Unit Two: Controlled Assignment (40%)
This is a practical examination with externally set themes. You will be given a minimum of three weeks to produce preliminary studies, and then in a five-hour editing examination you will then produce a focused practical response.

A2 Level Unit three: Personal Investigation (60% )
This is a practical project with a strong personal theme. In relation to your practical work you will be required to study in depth the work of relevant practitioners.

A2 Level Unit Four: Controlled Assignment (40%)
This is a practical examination with externally set themes. You will be given a minimum of three weeks to produce preliminary studies and then in a fifteen-hour editing examination you will produce a well-resolved final piece.

The specification followed is that offered by OCR. All units are internally assessed by your teacher and then moderated by OCR.

After The Course

The course attracts a broad range of students, who have continued onto to many different destinations such as Employment, B.A (Hons) courses in academic subjects, Foundation Diplomas in Art and Design, B.A (Hons) courses in Film, Animation and Photography.

Moving image is a skill for life. Although many students choose to continue to study art at university, those that do not pursue art can enjoy film and appreciate the role of image in our culture.

Subject Combinations

This course compliments many programmes of study across the college. It is not possible for students to combine Photography with this subject, as both subjects are classified as Lens and Light based Media by the examination board.

5 GCSEs at grade C or above. A minimum of Grade C or above in Art is advantageous. Students are required to complete a written element within each art course, therefore a Grade C in GCSE English is advantageous. All students are required to have their own DV mini tape or digital camcorder. Access to a photography camera is occasionally required.
