AS Music
has three units:1.Performing (solo recital of 5/6 minutes at Grade 5 level or above)2.Composing (one three-minute composition in your own style)3.Developing Musical Understanding (written paper on set works, listening tests and harmony exercises)A2 musichas three further units:4.Extended performance (15 minute recital at Grade 6 level or above)5.Composition and Technical study (stylistic composition)6.Further Musical Understanding (written paper on set works and listening tests)Methods of teachingListening, composting, harmony and history are covered by lectures, traditional lessons, practical work and discussions.All music students play and sing in at least one of the college bands, orchestras and choirs.AssessmentPerforming: performances are recorded, internally assessed and externally moderatedComposing: all composing is coursework monitored by teachers and externally assessedMusical Understanding: assessed by means of examinationInstrumental LessonsThe college provides financial assistance for instrumental/vocal lessons. Students either receive individual tuition at the college free of charge, or they can apply for a grant to help with the cost of lessons outside college. All students are expected to play in a college ensemble.CostsAll students need to purchase an Anthology of Music for the two year course (£25) plus a study guide and listening test book for each year (approximately £20 each). The Student support Fund can help students who have difficulty meeting these costs.Career possibilitiesMusic combines well with arts, science or technical subjects, leading to careers in performance, publishing, arts management, the media and education. Music graduates may also progress to law, accountancy or business.
