Biology is the science of the future!It is a tremendously varied and enjoyable subject and the skills gained are valuable and relate to everyday life.Biology has an impact on many modern issues including environmental hazards, organ donation, the human genome and genetically modified organisms.

What modules are covered?

AS

Module 1: Development of Practical Skills in Biology
Skills of planning, implementing, analysis and evaluation.

Module 2: Foundations in Biology
Includes Cell Structure, Biological Molecules, Nucleotides and Nucleic Acids, Enzymes, Biological Membranes, Cell Division, Cell Diversity and Cellular Organisation.

Module 3: Exchange and Transport
Includes Exchange Surfaces, Transport in Animals and Transport in Plants.

Module 4: Biodiversity, Evolution and Disease
Includes Communicable Diseases, Disease Prevention and Immune System, Biodiversity Classification and Evolution.

A Level

Continuation of modules 1-4 as above.

Module 5: Communications, Homeostasis and Energy
Includes Communication and Homeostasis, Excretion as an example of Homeostatic Control, Neuronal Communication, Hormonal Communication, Plant and Animal Responses, Photosynthesis, Respiration.

Module 6: Genetics, Evolution and Ecosystems
Includes Cellular Control, Patterns of Inheritance, Manipulating Genomes, Cloning and Biotechnology, Ecosystems, Population and Sustainability.

What qualifications will I get?

The awarding body for both the AS and A Levelqualification is OCR

How will I be assessed?

At AS: Two exam papers (50% each).
At A Level: Three exam papers (37%, 37% and 26%) with 12 practical activities to demonstrate practical competence (Pass/Fail).

What is the entry process?

Please apply online or alternatively you are able to collect an application form for completion.  Following receipt of application an invite for you to attend a formal interview will be issued.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum qualifications: Full level 2

Five grade C GCSEs or above including a grade C in Maths and a grade C in English or English Language plus a BB in Double Award Science or two B’s in separate Sciences, one of which must include Biology. 

 Offers subject to a satisfactory School Report. 

What else do I need to know?

Other subjects you may choose to study If you wish to study Biology at degree level you will often need one other science A level (usually Chemistry). Biology also complements other subjects such as Psychology and Health & Social Care.

English and Maths

English and maths qualifications are vitally important for future employers and universities, so the government has made it a priority for students to improve these skills.

Entry Level / Level 1 and Level 2: We’re here to help you on your journey, so if you do not achieve grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths, then you will study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

Students who achieve a D grade will be placed on the relevant GCSE programme, while students who achieve an E or below will be assessed to ensure they are placed on the right study programme for their ability.

Level 3 programmes: You will need to meet the course entry requirements specified on the course information above. For the majority of our Level 3 courses, students will need grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths. If this is not specified in the course entry requirement, then you may be able to study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

What can I do after this course?

A wide variety of jobs, including medical and paramedical, agriculture, animal care, conservation, teaching and environmental monitoring.There are many degrees and Higher National Diplomas offered in Biological Sciences including Forensics, Physiology, Ecology, Botany and Biomedical Sciences.

Course tuition fees are free for UK students under 19yrs.

All students may be charged for materials e.g. equipment, clothing etc.

UK students aged 19 and over will need to pay tuition fees as well as any materials, registration and exam fees.Some adults may be eligible for free tuition.Please contact us for more fee information.

The 24+ Advanced Learning Loan

If you are 24 or over at start of this course, you can apply for a new loan to cover the course fees. There are no repayments until the course is completed and you are earning £21000 or more. Therefore if you earn up to £21000 a year there’s nothing to pay back. If you earn £22000 a year your loan repayments would be as little as £7 per month. Call us for more information.
