You will need grade C or above in Science and Additional Science GCSE, or GCSE Biology, and we prefer you to have grade BB or above. (GCSE Applied Science - Double Award, does not prepare you for Biology at A level.)

Biology is a subject that can provide you with great enjoyment of and respect for all living things. It introduces you to some of the exciting new advances being made in modern Biology, including the influence of genes on our development, environmental issues and some of the ethical and technological aspects of the subject. Biology is a practical subject so you will also be developing experimental skills and an understanding of how to plan, analyse and evaluate experimental procedures.
An A Level in Biology supports a wide range of careers such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Veterinary Science, Physiotherapy, Food Science, Agricultural Science and Conservation.
What will I study?
AS Biology builds on topics covered in GCSE such as cell structure, enzymes, DNA and mitosis, as well as a number of new topics. You will study topics as diverse as the effect of diet and exercise on the body, heart disease, AIDS and immunity as well as biodiversity and evolution. You will also study the structure and function of the heart, blood and blood vessels in mammals, as well as the transport system in plants.
In the second year you will study a range of important topics such as respiration, hormones, photosynthesis, and the nervous system. You then study applications of biotechnology and genetics as well as ecosystems and sustainability.
