About this course

You should already have a grade B Additional Science at GCSE, or GCSE Biology, plus 4 other GCSEs in academic subjects, including Maths and English all at grade C or above. You will have to sit a diagnostic assessment to see whether this level of study is suitable for you. Mature students may not need the same academic qualifications but will still have to take the diagnostic assessment.

Course Content:
The course is assessed in three units with the following content: Unit 1 (Biology and Disease) including Causes of Disease; Enzyme and the Digestive system; Cells; Lungs; Heart and Immunity. Unit 1 is tested by a 1hour 15min written exam at the end of year. Unit 2 (The Variety of Living Organisms) including Variation, Investigation, DNA and Meiosis; Cell cycle; Biodiversity; Exchange and transport. Unit 2 is tested by a 1hour 45min written exam at the end of the year. Unit 3 (Practical and Investigative Skills) covering the contents of Unit 1 and 2. Unit 3 is internally assessed and includes AQA-set task to reduce burden on teachers and students. If you are 16-19 years of age, you will also be on a Curriculum 2000 programme doing Key Skills in Communication, Application of Numbers and IT plus enrichment sessions.

Other Information:
You will have regular assignments, tests and a mock examination during the year. You will need to achieve good grades in both the informal assessment and the AS level examinations to move on to the second year (A2). You must be well motivated and your attendance and punctuality must also be good throughout the year to remain on the course and be recommended into the A2 programme.

Progression:
Successful students progress from AS to A2. Following this they may then move to higher education. You can also leave the course after the AS Level examinations and go on to another level 3 course or employment.
