A Level in English Language and Literature

Introduction

Welcome to the English Language and Literature A Level course.

This qualification aims to provide an integrated approach to studying literary and linguistic texts. Students will study a wide range of spoken, written and multi-modal texts seen to demonstrate ways of constructing meanings through language.

As observers, readers and writers, students will be inspired by learning about spoken and written language from real and imagined worlds and they will engage with the craft of writing to create their own texts.

The course should encourage students to develop their interest and enjoyment in English as they:

- use integrated linguistic and literary approaches in their reading and interpretation of texts
- engage creatively and independently with a wide range of spoken, written and multimodal texts, exploring the relationships between texts
- undertake independent and sustained studies to develop their skills as producers and interpreters of language
