About the course
This course will introduce you to a wide range of both modern and classic writing. You will cover novels, plays and poetry. If you have enjoyed English Literature at GCSE, this course will allow you to explore Literature in greater analytical depth.
Key to your learning will be class discussion and debate, as well as developing the skills to structure fluent and well-argued essays. You will also consider how texts are influenced by contexts such as the historical period they were written in.

Course programme

Subjects covered AS Subject Content Poetry and Drama You will study an anthology of modern poetry from -present. For this unit you will also study one classic play (either a tragedy or a comedy). Prose You will study and compare two novels, one written before and one written after. Additional A Level Content In the second year you will additionally study a collection of classic poetry, a play by Shakespeare and produce an extended coursework essay comparing two texts from different periods and genres. Assessment Pattern AS Level has two examinations: Poetry and Drama: 2 hours (%) Prose: 1 hour (%) There is no coursework. Your AS grade will not count towards your A Level grade. A Level has three examinations: Drama: 2 hours minutes (%) Prose: 1 hour (%) Poetry: 2 hours 5 minutes (%) And one coursework essay (%) On completionIf you enjoy reading, debating and writing about a wide range of texts this course is for you. English Literature supports a wide-range of careers, including teaching, journalism and law.
