Method of Assessment
The first year and the second year are both assessed by two written examinations. There is no coursework although students undertake a lot of fieldwork during the two years and this is assessed through the written exams.
Why choose this course?
You will find studying Environmental Studies varied and stimulating, and it is ideal for students with an interest in a wide range of environmental issues. The environment is being recognised as an increasingly important concern, so there are an increasing number of careers in which it is relevant: including conservation, sustainable resource management, ecology, horticulture, pollution control and renewable energy. There are now over 400 different Environmental Science courses offered at British universities!
What will I study?
At AS you will study the unique characteristics of planet earth that allow it to sustain life. You will study the atmosphere, the lithosphere (rocks and soil), the hydrosphere (the watery part) as well as the biosphere (the living part). You will also look at wildlife conservation.
The A2 course investigates energy resources, environmental pollution, as well as the management of biological resources â€" farming, forestry and fisheries. You will study how these issues and problems affect all of us and how they can be managed in a more sustainable way.
The whole course gives students the opportunity to develop their analytical skills, as well as their ability to present arguments and debate, and to collect and write up fieldwork data.
Huish Extra
To support your studies in the classroom and illustrate parts of the syllabus, you will take part in a number of field trips. Areas you visit may include the Mendips, The Eden Project, The National Marine Aquarium, the Somerset Levels, Paignton Zoo and the Blackdowns. There is a compulsory three day residential field trip as part of the AS course.
