FILM STUDIES

Why should I come to Pendleton College?
If you just love watching films and want to find out how they are made and how they create the feelings you experience whilst watching them, then the staff at Pendleton share your interest. Film Studies is taught by committed staff who use the extensive collection of films and books in the department to really bring the study and enjoyment of film to life.

What will I study?
Two units are studied in year one:

  • Exploring Film Form: A detailed study of a film of your choice and a chance to create your own film sequence.
  • British and American Film: This covers three distinct areas: The study of Britain and Hollywood's film industry from the studios to the cinema screen, The underlying meanings behind British films (Horror films and Political films), The underlying meanings of two major Hollywood films.

A further two units are studied in year two:

  • Film Research and Creative Projects: A chance to conduct detailed research into your favourite film, genre, director or star. Another chance to create a film sequence through screenwriting.
  • Varieties of Film Experience (issues and debates): An opportunity to examine films from around the world, to look at the emotional effect that different films can have on an audience and apply complex film theory to a popular Hollywood film.

What will I achieve?
A good grade in AS/A Film Studies indicates that you have good research skills, the ability to use your knowledge analytically and a very sound knowledge of popular and world cinema.

How is the course assessed?
40% of the first year and 50% of the second year is assessed by coursework completed throughout the academic year with tutor guidance. The rest is assessed by end of year exams.

What else will I do?
Film Students will attend screenings at The Cornerhouse and Odeon cinemas. There will be a first year residential trip to a specific site relevant to your studies and second year students are offered the opportunity to visit Hollywood for a six day tour of the major film studios.
