About the course
Your critical and creative skills will be honed in the language of film. This exciting course explores a wide range of cinema from across the world, gives you the skills to analyse films in detail and consider how they create emotional impact. The specification is designed to deepen students’ understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of film, a major contemporary art form which continues to develop new modes of expression in the first decades of the twenty-first century. Film studies explores how films create meaning, for instance through cinematography and editing. Also examined is the structure and operation of the British and US film industries. Subjects covered AS Subject Content FM1: Exploring Film Form – % of AS (% of full A Level) • One analysis of micro aspects of a selected film extract (mise en scene, performance, cinematography, editing, sound) • One creative project creating a short sequence to demonstrate how micro features produce meanings and responses, with a reflective analysis. FM2: British and American Film – % of AS (% of full A Level); Three questions from three sections. • Producers and audiences of film • Topics in British Film • US film – comparative study of two films via case studies in class. A2 Subject Content FM3: Film Research and Creative Projects – % of A2 (% of full A Level) • A small-scale research project on an area of focus based on selected films • A creative project with a reflective analysis (ranging from a short film, a screenplay or an extended step outline FM4: Varieties of Film Experience: Issues and Debates; Three questions from three sections. • World Cinema • Spectatorship topics • Single film – critical study Assessment pattern AS Film is assessed through two modules: FM1 coursework module in two parts and FM2 examination of 2 ½ hours. A2 Film is assessed through two modules: FM3 coursework module in two parts and FM4 examination lasting 2 ¾ hours. Resources required Mini DV tape; blank DVD tape. USB memory stick, AS & A2 Study Guides. (Cameras and editing facilities are supplied for use within the course) On completion What skills will I learn? Film Studies develops skills in analysis of audio-visual material, applying film studies critical practices. Written and oral presentation skills are developed, in communication complex material clearly with independent insight. Technical skills in film planning, production and post-production are developed, along with reflective practice in evaluating work against intentions and professional practice. Students are encouraged to develop their independent research and analysis skills within a structured environment.
