Course overview

Geography is the study of the Earth. The world we live in is changing. Geography allows you to see why and how it is changing. It can enhance communication skills, literacy and numeracy, IT literacy, spatial awareness, team working, problem solving and environmental awareness.

Geography will appeal to you if:

you are curious about the worlds places, peoples and

environments

you like asking questions and finding answers

you are interested in local, regional and global issues

you have the ability to think independently

you wish to explore human, physical and

environmental geographical relationships.

AS Level (year one)

At AS Levelyou will study global themes, including globalisation and climate change. You will discover how your own actions can relate to the wider world, be it your local area or a country far away.

You will study two units:

Unit One

Global Challenges - you will study a range of topics such as Global Hazards, Climate Change and Future Global Challenges.

Unit Two

Geographical Investigations - this gives you an opportunity to undertake geographical research, including fieldwork. You will investigate two topics in depth, one of Extreme Weather or Crowded Coasts (physical geography), and one of Unequal Spaces or

Rebranding Places (human geography).

A Level (year two)

At A2 Levelyou will learn how the world is contested and develop practical research skills in your chosen area. You will study two units:

Unit Three

Contested Planet - you will consider five key world issues - Energy Security, Water Conflicts, Biodiversity under Threat, Superpower Geographies and Bridging the Development Gap.

You will then discuss possible technological solutions to these problems.

Unit Four

Geographical Research you will further develop your investigative skills by choosing one topic from the following six options:

Tectonic Activity and Hazards, Cold Environments, Life on the Margins - the food supply problem, The World of Cultural Diversity, Pollution and Human Health at Risk and Consuming the Rural Landscape.

How you will learn

You will learn through a variety of learning experiences including class discussion, group work, individual research, data collection and analysis on fieldtrips and the interpretation of graphs, maps and photographs.

There will be an AS residential fieldtrip to Barcelona.

How you will be assessed

Assessment is mostly by written examination although some resources are released in advance of the exam.

Other useful information

Exam results in the subject are above the national average and Geography goes very well with all the other AS and vocational subjects on offer.
