The A Level Heath and Social Care course has been designed to provide learners with the opportunity of tailoring their studies towards four sectors; Health, Education, Community Justice and Social Care. The course has a strong academic core which draws on knowledge from a range of disciplines and then applies this knowledge, not only to the sectors mentioned, but also a range of care settings within these sectors and the host of clients who access them.

What modules are covered?

AS Level

Unit 1 Effective Care and Communication
(Coursework 50% of AS Grade)
In addition to this ‘health work’ you will study a ‘broader’ topic area which can be applied to your chosen career path in most places. This is effective caring and communication. You will learn key caring skills and techniques, the rights and responsibilities of service users and the life quality factors a practitioner must work towards their client achieving. Effective communication lessons will teach you the skills needed to work with the range of client groups covered in the specification, including but not limited to patients in hospital, children and young people in schools and adults in the community justice system.

Unit 2 Understanding Health Conditions and Patient Care Pathways
(External Examination 50% of AS Grade)
At AS you will learn about a range of health conditions and the signs and symptoms a client would present their health practitioner with. The associated treatments of such health conditions will be studies as well as the safeguarding issues which surround these. An exploration into the role of immunisation against disease is studied in depth which leads onto the value of screening for a range of illnesses and conditions across the life span.

Throughout the AS course you will develop your independent research skills and will conduct your own investigations into the areas mentioned above.

A2 Level

Unit 6 Coursework Practitioner Roles
(Coursework 50% of A2 Grade)
Throughout the unit you will research and develop a detailed understanding of different practitioner roles within health, social care and the justice system. This includes safeguarding issues which can impact on the practitioner carrying out their role. This research will coincide with completion of UCAS applications.

Unit 10 Diagnosis, Treatment and Preventative Strategies
(External Examination 50% of A2 Grade)
This unit will introduce a variety of diagnostic techniques and the principals behind the use of the techniques. Students will examine different conditions and the key points of practice for a range of common medical treatments. This unit also looks into ways in which common diseases and disorders can be prevented.
