A level History
History A level is a broad course covering a wide range of events and time periods. You will study events from historic periods from the 1600s up to and including some 20th century history. For this course, you will need to have a genuine interest in past events both in Britain and on an international level. You will need to have a critical mind and to be willing to explore the impact and significance of historical events.

What will I be doing?
AS LEVEL (First year of course)
Historical Themes in Breadth
You will choose two topics to gain a broad overview of a particular theme. You will assess the historical significance of events, ideas, attitudes and beliefs and how these influenced behaviour and actions.

British History Depth Studies
You will study a period of British history in order to develop an in-depth understanding of attitudes, beliefs and structures of society.

A2 LEVEL (Second year of course)
Depth Studies and Associated Historical Controversies

You will undertake a depth study to explore the nature of challenges and conflict relating to societies and / or political systems in the period studied, and to explore an issue of historical debate.

Historical Enquiry
You will carry out an enquiry which will address the aspects of a chosen theme over a period of time of at last 100 years. You will examine both the short-term significance of an individual, movement or event, as well as the factors affecting the change throughout the whole period.

How will I be assessed?
Throughout the course you will be given regular assessed written tasks to help you develop the skills necessary for exam success.

You will be formally assessed by exams in June (some exams also available in January).

Where can I go after completing the course?
Students who study AS or A level History have access to a wide range of university courses and professional careers. It is studied at university by many who work in business as well as by lawyers, journalists and civil servants. History provides excellent training for people whose job demands clear and effective written and spoken communication, and an ability to think critically and analytically.
