Why should I study Mathematics?
Mathematics is a stimulating and challenging subject which is very highly regarded at Advanced Level. Both employers and universities are keen to take you if you have successfully completed AS or A2 Mathematics. The AS course builds upon all GCSE work but particularly algebra. Within the A2 course, algebra is studied to a much greater depth and there is also the opportunity to study either Mechanics or Statistics

What will I study?
AS Units
Module C1:
Indices and surds; polynomials; coordinate geometry and graphs; differentiation; integration.

Module C2:
Trigonometry; sequences and series; algebra including logarithms; further differentiation and integration.

Module D1:
Algorithms; graph theory; networks; linear programming.

A2 Units
To complete A level studies in Mathematics, you will need to take C3, C4 and either M1 or S1. The choice can be made at the end of Year 12, except if you are taking Further Mathematics as you take S1 as you will have already taken M1.

Module C3:
Algebra and functions; trigonometry; further calculus; numerical methods.

Module C4:
Algebra and graphs; further calculus including trigonometry functions; first order differential equations; vectors; further sequences and series.

Mechanics 1 (M1):
Forces; equilibrium; kinematics; Newton's laws of motion; momentum.

Probability and Statistics 1 (S1):
Representation of data; probability; discrete random variables; continuous random variables, estimates, correlation and regression.

What skills do I need?

• Strong algebraic skills
• Familiarity with topics covered at higher level GCSE
• A willingness to solve problems.

How will I be taught?
The subject will usually be taught by two teachers using a variety of methods, including individual and group work as well as use of computers. Learning will be reinforced by the completion of practice exercises.

Additional Support
Students requiring additional support may be able to join a group completing the Foundation's of Advanced Maths qualification in order to support the transition from GCSE to A level. This extra support is 1 period a week.

How is the course assessed?
Each module is assessed by means of a 1½ hr written examination. There is no coursework at AS or A2 Level.

What will this course prepare me for?
Mathematics is a much sought after qualification for entry to a wide variety of careers and Higher Education courses. Examples include accountancy, law, teaching, engineering, IT, medicine, mathematics and computing.

Private Study
As an approximate guideline AS subjects require 3-4 hrs of independent study each; A2 subjects 4-5 hrs each and GCSE subjects 2 hrs each.

What materials will I need to purchase?
Students are strongly encouraged to purchase a graphical calculator through college at the start of term.
