Course overview

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour. At AS you will develop a broad understanding of the core areas of modern Psychology. These include theoretical perspectives on Psychology and the study of key psychological research. At A2 you will study topics such as relationships, forensic Psychology and controversies within Psychology, as well as research methods and statistics.

AS Level (year one)

Unit One

This unit will cover key approaches in Psychology: behaviourism, psychodynamic, cognitive and biological approaches. You will learn about the assumptions, therapies and theories of each approach and how to compare and contrast them.

Unit Two

You will study classic research in the form of core studies into topics such as obedience, child development and eye-witness testimony. You will also learn about research methods, experimental and non-experimental methods, representing data, descriptive statistics and ethics.

A Level (year two)

Unit Three

This compulsory topic is a deeper exploration of research methods and issues in research, such as the use of human participants. You will also study how to effectively design and run psychological research.

Unit Four

Unit four looks at controversies in Psychology such as issues of gender bias in Psychology - , topics such as memory and relationships, and also applications of Psychology to real-world areas like forensic Psychology and abnormal Psychology.

How you will learn

You will learn through a variety of learning experiences ranging from individual research, class discussion, group work, small group tasks, presentations and lectures.

How you will be assessed

Unit one is a written examination of 1 hour 15 minutes and will comprise of mainly short answers with some extended writing. Unit two is 1 hour 45 minutes and comprises three shorter questions plus one extended question.

Unit three is 1 hour 30 minutes and is mainly stimulus response with one short essay. Unit four is two hours 30 minutes long and involves four 20 mark essays.

GCSE English Language, GCSE Mathematics and GCSE Science at grade C or above.

Psychology is one of the largest single subjects taught in the College. It is delivered by a team of very experienced and enthusiastic teachers, nearly all of whom are experienced external examiners.
