Why should I study Religious Studies?
Have you ever asked yourself the question â€-Who am I? Why am I here?' Have you ever wondered if there is life after death? Do you want to stretch your mind and discuss and debate questions like this? If so, Religious Studies is a subject that explores such issues from a variety of perspectives.

Religious Studies, nationally, is the fastest growing subject at A Level as measured by last year's exam entries. The number of students opting for this subject is on the increase. This reflects the fact that an understanding of the religious and spiritual dimension of life is interesting, challenging and relevant in today's society.

If you have an interest in religious ideas, cultural issues and historical events, this subject will appeal to you.

What will I study?
AS Units


Unit C:
Philosophy of Religion

Unit D:
Religion, Philosophy and Science

A2 Units
At A2 you will study 2 units to allow you to either focus on one area of Religious Studies, or provide a broader study of religion through a variety of topics including religion and ethics, philosophy of religion, the history of Christianity, the old testament, the new testament and ways of reading and understanding scripture.

What skills do I need?
Although the AS course builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills that you may have developed through the study of GCSE Religious Studies, the course does not assume or require that you have previously studied the subject.

How will I be taught?
This will consist of a number of methods such as PowerPoint, handouts and worksheets. You will be expected to conduct your own personal research, and actively engage in discussion, presentations and debates on a range of issues.

How is the course assessed?
The AS course is assessed through 2 written exams, each one lasting 1¼ hrs. In each of the 2 units, you must answer 2 structured essay questions, from a choice of 4.

The A2 course is also assessed through 2 written exams each one lasting 1½ hrs, in Unit 3 you must answer 2 structured essay questions in Unit 4 one extended essay.

What will this course prepare me for?
Religious Studies will give you access to a range of career and higher education opportunities. The course will provide you with the opportunity to develop a range of transferable skills which include collecting, synthesising and interpreting information from a variety of sources. These skills are in great demand and can help you take advantage of many employment opportunities. If you decide to go onto university, Religious Studies provides an excellent foundation for degrees in the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Private Study
As an approximate guideline AS subjects require 3-4 hrs of independent study each; A2 subjects 4-5 hrs each and GCSE subjects 2 hrs each.
