Sociology is the study of society, people and their behaviour. It focuses on our special world, families, education, religion, crime and deviance, social class, race and gender, and our relationship to that world. Sociologists would claim that society is the single most important influence in your life, and most would argue that our behaviour can be largely explained by our place in society.

Course Content: Sociology is the study of society, people and their behaviour. It focuses on our special world, families, education, religion, crime and deviance, social class, race and gender, and our relationship to that world. Sociologists would claim that society is the single most important influence in your life, and most would argue that our behaviour can be largely explained by our place in society. This course will introduce you to points of view on society and social relationships, ranging from those which approve of the way it works (functionalism) to those which argue for change (Marxism and Feminism). There is no right or wrong in sociology because so much of what we see and hear is open to interpretation. By studying sociology you will learn to think critically and independently about society and your place in it, gain the tools to think for yourself and develop your understanding of the world in which you live.
Course Format: Learning will take place through lectures, classroom discussion, group work and assignments. Students produce presentations, essays, and answer past papers on a regular basis. They are expected to complete homework and read outside the formal classes.
Progress is monitored through assessment of oral contributions and marking of students work. Formal internal assessments take place every half term and students sit external exams in January (at A2) and June. Students sit two papers at AS and two at A2.
Progression: For students to progress to A2 they will require at least a grade D at AS Level. Applications to University are encouraged and supported by the student services team.
