TRAVEL & TOURISM A LEVEL

WHAT IS TRAVEL & TOURISM?
The modules investigate various aspects of the Travel & Tourism industry in order to encourage students to develop their understanding of the inter-relationships that exist across the sectors. Students will learn to appreciate the scale and importance of this global and dynamic industry and identify how the sectors respond to changes. Students will be encouraged to focus on the characteristics and features of the individual sectors and to develop and practice skills necessary for employment within the industry, especially to plan, prioritise to meet deadlines as well as demonstrating the ability to work independently and within teams.

USEFUL SKILLS & INTERESTS
To achieve the Applied AS award students are required to develop their ability to undertake independent research and reading to investigate the variety of organisations that make up the industry. The AS focuses on the students ability to provide in depth explanations with examples and data to support findings (e.g. the scale of the industry and the popularity of holiday destinations).

COURSE STRUCTURE & CONTENT
The course is offered as a single or double award

Units covered For A2 single
AS modules include the following, the first three make up the single award and all six for the double AS. If students decide to progress to the full A level then units 9, 10 and 13 will form the single award and if students wish to study the double award they will also do units 11, 15 and 16.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
This course is approx 70% coursework and 30% tested (Units 1 & 9 for the AS and units 4 and 15 for the A2). The coursework involves building up portfolios of work completed during lessons and private study time. The work involved is very varied you might carry out questionnaires or surveys, write reports on visits to organisations or summaries of discussions. You will be expected to carry out research from books, the internet or by contacting as well as visiting organisations directly.

COURSE COMMITMENT
You will be expected to work in private study periods and at home in order to complete the required coursework. Students will be asked to sign a departmental commitment form that sets out the expectations of the department detailing a two way agreement between staff and students based on hard work and dedication to the team ethos of the department.

COURSE COSTS
Students will go on one day visit each term which is on average 50. There is also an opportunity for a residential visit, the cost of which varies.
