Course programme
This programme is a good introduction to the principle of accountancy, combined with the essential skills required for anyone wanting to understand the challenges and risks of starting a new business. You will need good attention to detail, prioritisation and organisation skills.
This programme includes the AAT Level 1 Award in Accounting (Access) which introduces students to the basic concepts of finance. It is designed to help younger and less experienced students gain the skills and confidence to build a career in business or accountancy. It will also give the grounding in theory required to be better prepared to progress to Level 3.
Among the elements covered in Access are:
-Maths for use in a business environment
-Essential accounting techniques
-Creating business documents, what they mean and the legislation surrounding them
-Accounting in a professional environment, the behaviour and professionalism required of an AAT member
At Level 2, students will be introduced to a broad range of skills and will gain an accounting qualification that is recognised internationally. The units covered will include:
-Basic accounting concepts and the double entry ledger system
-Costing, which covers how costs are apportioned and used to inform business decisions
-A computerised element will involve experience of managing accounts on a computerised software package called Sage, experience of which is often required by prospective employers
-Introduction to payroll
-Spreadsheets
-Business communication and office working skills
-Working effectively in Finance & Accounting
-Computerised payroll
Work experience placements will require students to plan and organise their own placement and travel arrangements. This is part of the necessary development and preparation for employment. You will learn and develop your skills through a mixture of lessons, talks/demonstrations, assignments, work related projects and investigations. You will be required to undertake a significant amount of private study as the programme encourages students to research the tasks given to them and produce written assignments. You should expect to be at College for around 13 hours per week and to spend at least 5 hours a week studying outside of class.
Students will need to take a number of computer-based exams; some of which will instantly be marked automatically and some that will require marking and then passing through internal and external verification. Informal assessment will take place through a variety of methods including observations, projects/assignments, professional discussions and developing a portfolio of evidence.
