Overview The Academic practice is a part-time postgraduate taught programme combining theory, practice, and the use of reflection to enable you to develop your teaching skills and educational knowledge for your role in Higher Education. The programme is primarily aimed at staff (internal or external to City University London) with an educating or facilitating role with students.Research students at City University London who are required to teach are also eligible to attend and complete certain modules.A key characteristic of the programme involves learning by working with peers, as well as through engagement with a number of educational technologies.The programme is only suitable for those whose role entails educating others - and for some of the modules additional experience may be required. Entry Requirements: The programme is open for application by staff at the University, as well as external colleagues. Course Content Core modules include:

Learning, Teaching & Assessment (EDM120; 15 Level 7 Credits)

  • This is the baseline module for the MAAP programme, and introduces participants to key educational issues: learning, teaching, assessment, feedback, and plagiarism prevention.

Professional & Personal Development Planning (EDM112; 15 Level 7 Credits)

  • Encourages the development of a series of reflective activities through the use of an e-portfolio. It also provides opportunities for peer observation of teaching.
Core Elective modules include:

Curriculum Development & Evaluation (EDM106; 15 Level 7 Credits)

  • Focuses on curriculum models and philosophy, approaches to developing and evaluating curricula and stakeholder engagement.

Student Support & Personal Tutoring (EDM118; 15 Level 7 Credits)

  • Examines the range of support techniques needed for students in contemporary higher education, with a particular focus on the role of the personal tutor.

Technology Enabled Academic Practice (EDM116; 30 Level 7 Credits)

  • This module provides a larger scale examination of how technology can be used to develop all aspects of academic practice. It offers the opportunity to develop expertise in the area of online and blended learning, and to become effective users and evaluators of a wide range of educational technologies.

Information & Communication Technology in Higher Education (EDM107; 15 Level 7 Credits)

  • Examines the impact of ICT on teaching and learning, research and policy in UK Higher Education.

Educational Research Methods (EDM109; 15 Level 7 Credits)

  • This is a 'lead in module' for the module EDM114 (above). It provides guidance and practice in drawing up a proposal for educational research, and identifies key research methods.

Research Supervision (EDM119; 15 Level 7 Credits)

  • Designed to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to supervise students undertaking masters and doctoral level research projects.

Developing Leadership and Your Reflective Practice (EDM121; 30 Level 7 Credits)

  • This module focuses on those personal and professional skills required to become a reflective practitioner, and effective leader regardless of your position, within a higher education environment.

Educational Research Project & Publication (EDM114; 60 Level 7 Credits)

  • Allows participants the opportunity to undertake a genuine piece of educational research, with the guidance of a supervisor.

Students must gain 60 credits for a postgraduate certificate and 120 credits for a postgradaute diploma. The addition of the Educational Research Project & Publication module (EDM114) leads to the MA.

Course Structure

This programme provides maximum flexibility in terms of you engaging with it.

Study is part-time and each module usually consists of between 2 and 6 days teaching spread across one or two terms. In addition, modules include a range of online activities and assessments.

Introductory Certificate in Academic Practice

This is a single module programme, comprising the Learning, Teaching and Assessment module. Suitable for individuals for who have just entered into their teaching career or for whom teaching is a minor, rather than a major, part of their role. The module is introductory and suitable for all who undertake any facilitation of student learning.

Postgraduate Certificate

This is a part time programme. There are two routes for obtaining this qualification. These routes are suitable for individuals new or relatively new to higher education for whom teaching is a major part of their role. The postgraduate certificate can usually be completed in one or two years.

Postgraduate Diploma

This is a part time programme, usually completed over two or more years. This qualification can also be taken following the technology enabled route. The second stage modules are intended for more experienced staff or individuals who have satisfactorily completed the first year of the programme; or who have been able to enter the second year through AP(E)L (accreditation of Prior (Experiential) Learning).

MA Academic Practice

If you have successfully completed the requirements for either the Postgraduate Diploma in Academic Practice or the Postgraduate Diploma in Academic Practice (Technology Enabled) and would like to pursue a research project in educational research or disseminate a project they have done, the dissertation module may be undertaken. With the requirements of Years 1, 2 and 3 met, you are entitled to the qualification of MA Academic Practice, this being the only qualification available at full Master's level.

Teaching and Assessment

Module Team

For each module of the programme, there is a Module Leader and normally a larger team involved in the provision of each module.

Teaching and Independent Study

There are different teaching arrangements for each module, depending on the type and size of the module.  Most of the modules involve a set of four teaching days. Research based modules comprise less formal teaching and more supervision.
