About this course

Delegates should have a working knowledge of Access. This course assumes knowledge of how to create a table, a form based on a table, a simple query and a report using the wizard. Delegates should have knowledge of simple one-table databases, although some knowledge of relationships would be an advantage.

Prerequisites

Objectives

    Delegates will be able to :
  • Identify the many different ways of extracting information from a database using a variety of queries.
  • Understand the principles around Database design and why it is important to plan and prepare a database before entering any information.
  • Create forms and reports without having to rely on the wizards.
  • Use queries not only to select requisite information from a database but also to make en masse changes to the data.

Database theory

  • Database normalisation - Designing your tables in an efficient manner in order to avoid data replication and ensure good database design
  • What is a relational database?

Tables

  • Linking data from Outlook or Exchange
  • Converting an Access database to a previous version
  • Customising input masks using code instead of the wizard
  • Using Lookups when designing fields in a table
  • Formatting using format codes, ensuring consistent data entry
  • Indexes, speeding up your database (pros and cons)
  • Multiple primary keys - setting more than one field as a primary key
  • Importing data from Excel, Access and text files

  • Multiple table queries
  • Selecting all fields
  • Parameter queries, supplying the criteria for a query when running the query
  • Cross Tab query: Displaying data in a succinct format
  • Make Table query: Making a table from the results of a query
