Short Description: This programme prepares mature students to apply for entry to Higher Education courses such as Nursing, Physiotherapy, Radiography and Science Degrees.

Where will it take me? This course offers mature students an accelerated route into Higher Education through a choice of pathways of study and will provide you with a recognised academic qualification.

Those who meet the entry requirements, which vary depending on the course applied for, will be accepted for a place on a Degree course at Queen's University Belfast or another relevant institution. It should be noted that the 'Skills' module (Numeracy and Communications) in this course is NOT an equivalent to GCSE Maths and/or English Language. You are advised to enrol on a GCSE Maths and/or English course if you need these qualifications to progress.

What's it all about? You will pursue 6 modules of study, 5 of which are 'academic'.

You will also study a 'Skills' module which includes:
  • Communications
  • Numeracy
  • Information Technology (Key Skills Level 2)
  • Study Skills


You will also have access to careers guidance and help in applying for Higher Education courses through a weekly tutorial session. You will choose between 3 pathways of study.

Humanities Pathway: History, English Literature and Sociology - this prepares you for Law, Psychology, Social Science, Social Work and Humanities Degrees.

Social and Biological Science Pathway: Sociology, Biology and English Literature - this prepares you forsuch as Nursing, Social Work, Health and Caring Degrees.

Science Pathway: Biology, Chemistry and English Literature - this prepares you for Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Science Degrees.

How will I be assessed? You will be assessed by means of both coursework (40%) and end of module/year examinations (60%).

Why choose us? This course is particularly suitable for adults returning to education as classes are mainly held in the mornings. You may also may be able to gain an IT qualification or sit a GCSE Maths or English Language qualification.

There is also flexibility for you to access modules via part-time or full-time programme according to your needs.
