This is a level 3 programme which gives students the opportunity to pursue art and design in exploratory, investigative and experimental ways. The course is designed for students who may not have gained any previous formal qualifications, but during a portfolio interview, demonstrate an enthusiasm for and commitment to art and design. Traditionally, the programme entertains a diverse range of age groups and learners are encouraged to develop their creative and technical skills through lectures, workshops and projects. Study skills and core units, support learners over the course of the programme. Self directed work encourages students to become more independent in preparation for progression into higher education and employment. Programme content includes drawing and painting, 2D and 3D design studies, Aesthetics and History of Art units which provide a general awareness, knowledge and understanding of art & design and its contexts. Drawing and Painting units involve working directly from observation to develop analytical, recording and compositional skills which learners apply to personal creative work. Design Studies units introduce learners to disciplines such as Graphics, Ceramics and Jewellery and Fine Art. Learners will complete a 60 credit diploma through a series of core and academic units.Opportunities will also be provided to complete GCSE's in English, Welsh and Mathematics and for Welsh language development .

The programme provides an excellent basis for progression to higher education The college offers BA (Hons) Degree pathways in 9 subject areas across a wide spectrum of art & design with attractive bursaries for those that progress from this programme. There are a significant number of careers directly related to art & design some of which are listed here: Fine Artist - opportunities can include studio practice, painter, sculptor, multimedia, curator, art therapy. Designer - this can include specialist specific careers for example fashion, textile, graphic, illustrator, product, photography film, furniture, theatre as well as more generic and diverse careers such as designer maker, promotion, styling and marketing and teaching.

Course programme
Programme Features:
Delivered in a dedicated Art and Design environment which includes dedicated course and drawing studios, print making facilities, ceramic department, access to learning support and direct access to two libraries at Coleg Sir Gar and University of Wales Trinity Saint Davids. There is also an art materials shop on site. Internal progression routes onto our well respected degree programmes. Final year learners exhibit their work in an end of year exhibition which is open to the public.
