Social Policy

Who is the programme for? This module suitable for students who are 19 years of age and over and who have an interest in social policy and contemporary history, and who wish to gain entry to Higher Education. Please note: This module can only be studied as part of a full time Access Diploma.

What will I study? The Social Policy and Society module carries 15 Level 3 credits. It examines the development of the post-war welfare state and debates about its present and future; it explores the role of ideologies (such as Thatcherism) in explaining social conflict and social change; and explores the current state of Britain in the early 21st century. As a (local and national) case study it focuses on the miners strike in the 1980s. In relation to social policy, particular attention is paid to recent reforms affecting education and the NHS, housing and the growth of homelessness, social services and the role of social workers, and the problem of poverty and "social exclusion".

Entry to the Programme?

How is it assessed? The module is assessed by means of coursework exercises, essays and an examination. More details of the syllabus, examination and essay requirements, and recommended reading are available in the course booklet.

Future prospects? Social Policy and Society is ideal for students who are interested in studying the social sciences and/or social policy in higher education. It is good preparation for the study of sociology and social administration, politics and social history. It is also useful for anybody interested in Social Work as a career, or working in the NHS, in teaching and local government, or who may be interested in voluntary work and wish to know more about the role of voluntary organisations in welfare provision.

When will the programme start? The course begins in September and lasts one academic year. The module is taught over 3 terms for approximately 3 hours per week (Monday mornings).

How long will it take? The Access Diploma runs from September to July. Students are encouraged to apply through UCAS in the Autumn term for entry to Higher Education in September 2010.

What about the Money? Please note that fee remission applies to anyone on a means tested benefit, job seekers allowance, a programme designated as Skills for Life (SfL) or where someone is studying their first full Level 2 or first full Level 3 (aged 19 25). If you are under 19 on the 31 August 2008 you would not normally pay tuition or registration fees.
