This course is open to all students who are over 19, with particular emphasis on those with an interest in Art and Design and who wish to study within this area at degree course level. This is a one year course with excellent progression opportunities at both local and national Higher Education institutions and internally to the College’s own degree programmes. Although the course offers no specific placement opportunities, we are part of the Wakefield Artwalk allowing opportunity to participate in live exhibitions throughout the year, and we also have links with alternate creative organisations. An ideal candidate will possess a passion for Art and Design acquired through their personal interests or commercial activities in this field.

Entry Requirements You must have GCSE grade C in English Language or above before joining the course in September. A passion and interest in an Art and Design related subject is highly desirable, along with an art related portfolio/examples of work to be presented during the interview process.

What you will Study The finalised module list is yet to be confirmed, however, the course aims to develop and enhance fundamental artistic skills in drawing, painting, and colour theory and to assist you in developing personalised projects from initial concepts, through to research, development and outcomes within a preferred specialist pathway, e.g. Fine Art, Fashion, Textiles, Illustration, Graphics etc. Contextual studies will also form a large part of the course, introducing you to a diverse range of artists and art related movements to enthuse and inspire media and technique use, and to develop your understanding of concepts, theories and influences of the works of others. Ongoing review and evaluation of own working methods and practice is also an integral part of the course. The course comprises of a combination of graded and ungraded units, including Study Skills that will support your application to HE courses (Online UCAS application, portfolio building, interview preparation etc.)
How you will Learn You will learn through formal tutor led sessions within an art studio environment, group discussions and critiques, individual practical work and extensive research activities outside of the classroom.
