2. Course description This course is subject to validation. This is a brand new course designed for mature learners who want to study towards a degree in computer science. The programme aims to develop the skills and self-confidence in learners necessary to progress to their chosen course in higher education or profession. The aim of the course is to give mature learners (19 years and over) a second chance at education by developing personal confidence, the ability to study, analytical and problem solving skills and the guidance to help decide their future. The course will provide a thorough grounding in the key concepts and theories, related to computing software and mathematics, in preparation for further studies or training within the computing field.

Course programme

3. Entry requirements You must have at least one GCSE grade C (or above) in mathematics or English language. If you do not have one of these grades you will need to undertake a pre-course assessment, which will involve a maths test or a 700 word essay. These are necessary to assess the numerical problem solving skills and the ability to produce written communication both of which are fundamental to succeeding on this course. Other factors taken into consideration are an individuals work experience, interests, motivation and previous academic attainment. Depending on an individuals entry qualifications, a student may be required to attend the 10 week Routes to Computing course of study during the summer term in preparation for the September start. Additional GCSE English or maths (as applicable) study options can be built in to the Access course timetable. 4. Equipment required No equipment required 5. Assessment method The course will be split into modules which are individually assessed. Later modules build on the skills developed in the earlier ones. Some modules use exams in the assessment process but only as part of the overall assessment whilst others use coursework only. Modules are graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.
