Increasingly, adults are returning to education through the Access to Adult Learning & Training courses, in order to improve their job prospects, or to take on the challenge of a university education. Access programmes are developed to enable ‘adult returnees’ to build upon their past work and life experiences to increase their self confidence, self belief, academic and personal skills.

Course programme


The aim of the course is to give mature learners a second chance at education. This Access course will facilitate entry on to Higher Educational programmes, and is specifically designed for learners wanting to pursue degree qualifications in English or Education for example, teaching, journalism, librarianship or straight English or creative writing degree. You would normally be expected to possess a GCSE in English at grade C or above.


All modules are internally assessed and graded and internally and externally moderated. Grades awarded are Pass, Merit or distinction.




The course is made up as follows:


Core units:



  • European History

  • English and Cultural Studies

  • Psychology

  • Sociology


Optional units from:



  • English Language

  • English Literature

  • History

  • Psychology

  • Sociology

  • Education


The course can be studied as follows:


One year programme (Studying at Level 3)


Mondays: High Melton 10:00 – 15:30, Thursdays: The Hub 9:30 – 17:00. Timetabled sessions will be delivered using a blended approach which combines direct tutor contact with distance learning using the college virtual learning environment. In addition, you will be expected to complete a minimum of 12 hours per week of independent study.


In preparation for achieving the level three Access to HE Diploma by the fastest route possible you should consider the following:



  • Achieving (or updating) Maths to GCSE C or above Or the level 2 equivalent.

  • Achieving (or updating) English to GCSE C or above.

  • Specific University entry requirements such as GCSEs or national qualifications.

  • Specific University work experience requirements, either paid or voluntary.

Once on the one year full-time course you will be required to complete an application for a University place straight away. Therefore, prior research is essential.   • Monday and Wednesday 1pm-5pm.

  • Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9am-1pm.


Please note: some university courses require that you must have RELEVANT work experience (paid or voluntary) prior to submitting your application for a university place. If you need to do voluntary work to gain relevant experience then you will need to consider completing the Access course over 2 years-see details of our ‘Stepping up to Access’ level 2 course.
