About this course
Students are expected to have at least 4 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language. For those with fewer GCSE qualifications, work experience or alternative qualifications may be taken into account. In all cases a diagnostic assessment would need to be completed before a place is offered, as well as a one-to-one interview to assess suitability for the course.

Who is the programme for? The course is ideal for mature students who have some experience and qualifications already, and who wish to enhance their career prospects by gaining entry to higher education. It is also suitable for people who have been out of education for some time and need to 'brush up' their academic skills.
What will I study? Students will study 5 subjects. These include English Literature, History and Theology, as well as 2 Core modules (IT and study skills/academic development) For those who would like to undertake initial teacher training, Science is available for those who do not already have the GCSE, and would replace one of the subjects above. In some cases it is also possible to take a subject from the Social Science pathway. Advice and guidance will be available to help you to decide whether this would be appropriate.
Entry to the Programme?
How is it assessed? The programme is assessed through a variety of assignments including essays, examinations, seminars, reports etc.
Future prospects? Students progress directly in to higher education, often into initial techer training. Other degrees that students have gone into include English, History, Theology, Classics, and related Humanities subjects. St Helens College offers progression on to the BA(Hons)degree in Cultural Studies, and the Foundation Degree in Social Policy, Health and Housing.
When will the programme start? The programme starts in September.
How long will it take? This full time day programme lasts for 1 academic year. Attendance is for 16 hours per week
