Who is this course for? The programme has been developed for adults who wish to return to education to eventually study for a university degree, change their career or study for general interest.
Previous knowledge required: No formal qualifications are required to enrol on the course, only a commitment to study and motivation to succeed. Acceptance to the programme is by satisfactory interview and the outcomes of initial guidance.
What will I study? The programme has been designed to develop students' confidence and self esteem to enable them to become self directed and independent learners. Students at Newtown will study the following subjects: Core Subjects: Communications / Study Skills, Numeracy and Information Technology Options (five to be chosen): Health Studies, History, English Literature (including creative writing), Sociology, Psychology, Philosophy/Exploring Visual Arts, Environmental Studies. Each subject is broken down into units of study lasting for between 9-18 weeks.
What else will I do? Students may wish to pursue other qualifications, such as courses in Information Technology, GCSE's and GCE's. Students may also take advantage of the activities run by the Students' Association and participate in visits organised by their subject tutors.
How will I be assessed? There will be a combination of examinations and coursework.
What will I achieve? The Access to Higher Education Diploma.
What can I do afterwards? Apply to study for a degree at Coleg Powys or at a university.
Materials required: None - books are vailable on loan from the college library.
