About this course

There are no formal entry requirements, although adults may prefer to begin this course after studying GCSEs or equivalent qualifications. All students will be required to attend an interview to assess their suitability for the course.
Students interested in Primary Teaching will find it beneficial to obtain voluntary experience as a helper in a school.

Who The Course is for
This course is ideal for adult learners who wish to change career or have a desire to work in the area of Teaching or related areas (eg Early Childhood Studies) or pursue other further studies at degree level eg History, English.
Course Content
All students will study 2 Level 2 units:
- Introduction to History
- Introduction to English Literature
Plus Study Techniques
Level 3
- English Language & Literature
- History
Plus HE Toolkit
There will also be opportunity to study GCSE equivalent Maths and GCSE Science if required.

Entry RequirementsLearning & Assessment Methods
Assessment will be by coursework and examinations. Accreditation will be by the Open College of the North West (OCNW).
Qualifications Gained
Nationally recognised (QAA) Access to Teaching Certificate.
Progression Opportunities
Successful candidates may wish to progress to a Degree with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or a subject degree in their area of interest. Those wishing to teach in secondary education can then progress to a PGCE.
If you successfully complete a level 3 course at Skelmersdale & Ormskirk College you are eligible to apply for an place on an appropriate Foundation Degree at either Skelmersdale & Ormskirk College or Newcastle College (subject to satisfactory interview or course audition).

It provides opportunities for employment in all aspects of Teaching and related professions, however a student is not restricted to these professions alone and may wish to seek employment or further study in other areas.
