These qualifications are focused on the practical skills and knowledge that an employee will need to be a successful accounting professional.
The NVQs and Apprenticeships together provide a sound base enabling a student to become an Accounting Technician within 3 years.
Programme Content
An Apprentice will gain a variety of skills such as:
- Recording income, receipts and payments
- Preparing ledger balances and an initial trial balance
- Supplying information for management control
- Working with information technology, achieving personal effectiveness, health and safety
The NVQ will start to develop the employee’s skills in double entry book-keeping, including working with purchase, sales and general ledgers, and give them an understanding of management and administrative processes.
An Advanced Apprentice will gain the following skills:
- Maintaining financial records and preparing accounts
- Recording cost information
- Preparing reports and returns
Special features - In addition to the NVQ in Accounting, the Apprenticeship frameworks allow the Apprentice to gain key skills in Communication and Application of Number at Level 2.

Entrants usually start as apprentices, progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship and then move on to the Technician NVQ in Accounting Level 4.
They are then ideally positioned to move on to further qualifying studies such as those leading to becoming a Chartered Accountant or a Chartered Management Accountant, usually with several exemptions for the first year of study.
