Course programme



This course is designed to give you the relevant training and education required to work within an accounts environment. The course is delivered at Colchester campus and is teamed with work-based experience.


The Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2 Certificate) in Accounting is a unit-based course. There is no limit to the number of times a unit can be taken, provided the standards do not change, but a re-sit fee will be charged.


The standards for the course are set by the Qualifications and Credit Framework Authority with the qualification being awarded by the AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians).


To qualify for full membership of the AAT students must satisfy the assessment criteria at all levels and participate in one year’s relevant working practice.


CASE STUDY/PROJECTS are supplied by AAT. Assessment takes place at the college by means of completing tasks based upon a case study, over a prescribed length of time.


COMPUTER BASED EXAMS are set and marked by the AAT. They are time-constrained (approximately two hours) examination assessing the candidate’s knowledge and understanding of the Accounting units as well as Communication and IT. NB All computer based exams will be taken during the day.


It is vital that students aiming for accreditation of the Level 2 Certificate in Accounting and eventual AAT membership attend all lectures.


The Apprenticeship in Accounting certificate is awarded by the Financial Services Skills Council, once all the requirements of the Apprenticeship Framework have been completed.

As part of the Apprenticeship framework you will also complete Employment Rights and Responsibilities, and Functional Skills Level 2 in English and maths.

Career Opportunities

Career pathways may include trainee accountant or trainee accounting technician.


Course Progression

Possible progression to the Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3 Diploma) in Accounting, to gain further accountancy skills that can lead to full membership of the AAT, and to higher professional accounting qualifications.
