Course programme

The first year provides you with an introduction to accounting, finance and management. Second and final year modules specialise in either accounting or finance, depending on your individual career aspirations.

Year 1

You will be introduced to essential principles and theory relating to accounting, finance and business through the following compulsory modules:

  • Introduction to Financial and Management Accounting - your foundation in the theory and practice of accounting and an introduction to the role, context and language of financial reporting and management accounting.
  • Introduction to Business - helps you examine the context of an organisation and its environment.
  • Introduction to Organisational Behaviour - develops your understanding of the structure, function and performance of organisations.
  • Economics for Business - introduces you to the central concepts and methods of analysis used by economists in solving business problems.
  • Principles of Marketing - focuses on marketing as an integrated business activity and how this underpins an organisation's response to market demand.
  • Developing Business Skills - develops key qualitative and quantitative skills used in business.
Year 2

You will continue to study compulsory modules to develop your knowledge and expertise, including:

  • Financial Accounting - looks at the theory and practice of financial accounting and reporting.
  • Management Accounting - builds on concepts introduced in the first year.
  • Business and Company Law - provides an introduction to contract and company law.
  • Business Finance - examines financial issues from a business perspective, applying theory to real business examples.

You will also be able to choose an optional module from a wide selection.

Year 3

Your third year will be spent overseas at one of our partner universities and although you will need to pass your year abroad, it won’t count towards your final degree classification. In addition to studying business and related subjects offered by your host institute, a year abroad will give you the opportunity to experience a different culture and learn a little more about yourself. Students who spend a year abroad often grow in self-confidence as a result of the challenges posed by a new environment. This is a quality future employers find attractive and also a valuable life skill in itself.

Year 4

In your final year you will take a number of advanced modules to develop your understanding of finance and accounting, alongside studying subjects such as audit and taxation. These modules will include:

  • Advanced Financial Accounting - develops your accounting skills and ability to critically assess financial accounting principles.
  • Advanced Management Accounting - advanced theory and methodology in management accounting and performance management.
  • Audit and Accountability - provides an introduction to the theory and practice of auditing, with emphasis on the external audit of limited companies.
  • Personal and Corporate Taxation - examines the theory and practice of personal and corporate taxation within the UK.

You will also be able to choose a further optional module from within the School or from across the University.
